What is ERH?

The Emergency Ride Home (ERH) Program is the "commuter's insurance policy." Carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking, or taking transit to work are all better for the environment than driving alone and help reduce traffic on roadways. But what happens when someone is at work without a car and needs to get home in an emergency? ERH participants can rest assured – they’ll never be left stranded.
  • You must be an employee or member of a company or organization that participates in the ERH program.
  • Participants must either carpool, vanpool, bike, walk, or take transit to work (please note that your employer may require you to use one of these alternatives a minimum number of days per week).
  • All program users need to be registered in advance at eCommuter.org/emergency-ride-home.

Valid reasons for taking a ride:

  • Illness/severe crisis of participant or immediate family member.
  • Stranded at work because the carpool or vanpool driver left due to an emergency.
  • Supervisor obligates you or your driver to work past your normally scheduled time with no prior notice.

Invalid reasons for use:

  • Personal errands or appointments.
  • Business-related travel.
  • Working late without a supervisor’s request.
  • Injury on the job (workers comp).
  • Inclement weather.
  • Utility failure.
  • Participant's home.
  • Public transportation connection point.
  • Hospital or doctor’s office in the event of sudden illness.
  • Other appropriate destinations as approved by the TMA Director.

Qualified participants can pre-register for ERH and commute worry-free knowing that they will have access to emergency rides through Lyft, taxi, or rental cars at no out of pocket cost.

Participants receive a complete packet when they register. Details about eligibility, what qualifies as an emergency, where the service covers, and how to book a ride are all included.

Pre-registration in ERH is required for all participants.
